In a major announcement, Malaysia has declared that starting December 1, Indian nationals can travel to the country without the need for entry visas. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim shared this news during his People’s Justice Party’s annual congress, highlighting that Indian citizens can now enjoy visa-free entry for up to 30 days. It’s important to note that while the visa requirement has been lifted, security screenings will still be in place for Indian visitors.

This update is particularly significant for travelers from India, as they used to obtain visas upon arrival, incurring a total cost of RM 200 (Rs 3,558), including processing charges. The removal of this requirement is part of Malaysia’s strategy to increase tourist arrivals and boost economic growth, as the country heavily relies on the tourism sector and visitor spending.

In addition to the welcoming news for Indian nationals, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also announced that, starting December 1, Chinese nationals will also enjoy visa-free entry to Malaysia. This aligns with the Prime Minister’s efforts to streamline visa requirements for travelers and investors, especially from India and China, aiming to encourage their visits and contribute to Malaysia’s economic development.

This positive shift in visa policies follows recent trends in the region, with countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand also eliminating visa requirements for Indian tourists. Thailand, for instance, implemented a visa-free policy for Indian tourists from November 10, allowing a generous 30-day stay. While initially set to expire on May 10 of the following year, the Thai government is open to extending it if there’s continued demand. The collective move towards visa-free travel signifies a growing emphasis on facilitating tourism and strengthening international ties in the region.
